Arabia's ARA art department was founded by Kurt Ekholm in 1938. ARA objects were made from Finnish red faience, which was covered with a light tin glaze or sometimes with a matte glaze. Ekholm, Olga Osol, Michael Schilkin, Toini Muona, and Kaj Franck designed jugs, vases, and bowls that were painted by unknown painters. The floral and ornamental decorations were not named, and the painters often signed the objects with their initials on the bottom. The department founded was in operation until 1950.
